• Seasonal Pasture Myopathy

Did you know that this is a highly fatal disease suffered by horses and ponies in the UK and Northern Europe?

It is caused by a toxin which is found in sycamore seeds and is released after the characteristic ‘helicopter’ seeds are eaten.

The disease occurs in the Autumn as the levels of toxin increase in sycamore seeds at this time of year. Approximately a quarter of affected horses can survive, so early recognition and treatment is crucial.

    How to recognise the disease:

    • Lethargy
    • Weakness
    • Dullness
    • Stiffness
    • Increased periods of lying down

If you suspect the disease call your vet IMMEDIATELY!
